Multiplayer and matchmaking terms
Connection quality and matchmaking decide how a multiplayer game feels more reliably than hardware does. This guide explains the network vocabulary, the matchmaking vocabulary and the words that surround conduct in matches.
For a player in Australia, geography is the dominant factor in this guide. Data travels at a finite speed and every intervening network device adds delay, so the physical distance between a player and the server cluster their account is tied to sets a floor on latency that no hardware purchase can lower. The network words
- Ping

- Variation in ping between one measurement and the next. Steady high ping is playable; unsteady ping is not, because prediction in the client cannot compensate for a moving target.
- Packet loss
- Data that never arrives. It produces the symptoms players usually blame on the game: shots that do not register, opponents that teleport, and brief freezes in an otherwise smooth match.
- Tick rate
- How many times per second the server updates the state of the match. A higher tick rate resolves fast exchanges more consistently, at a cost in server capacity.
- Dedicated server
- A server run by the publisher rather than hosted on a player's machine. Standard for large titles, and the reason a match continues when one player disconnects.
- Hitbox
- The volume the server tests a shot against. It approximates the visible model rather than matching it exactly, which explains some shots that look like they should have landed.
- Desync
- A state where the client's picture of the match and the server's disagree. The server's version is the one that counts.
Diagnosing a bad connection in order
- Check the in-game network display, which usually shows ping and packet loss together. Packet loss above zero for a sustained period is the more serious of the two.
- Test whether the problem is the game or the connection by trying another service. A connection that is poor everywhere is not a game problem.
- Try a wired connection. Wireless adds jitter that averages out for streaming and does not average out for a match.
- Close background applications that stream or sync. Large uploads affect a game far more than large downloads.
- Confirm the server region the account is using. An account created in the wrong region produces persistent high ping that no local fix will improve.
Where a problem persists across regions and services, it belongs to the internet provider rather than to the game, and the provider's own fault process is the route. That is also the point at which a complaint, if it comes to one, has somewhere to go.
Matchmaking, queues and balance
Matchmaking assembles waiting players into opposing teams. Every system balances three things that cannot all be maximised at once: match quality, waiting time, and the size of the pool being drawn from. A system that insists on closely matched teams will make players wait; a system that fills matches instantly will produce uneven ones. Publishers make that trade-off differently, and they change it as populations rise and fall.
Queue time is therefore a measurement of population as much as of the system. For an Australian player, queue times at local evening hours on a nearby cluster are the honest test of whether a game has a living community in this time zone, and they are worth checking before a long progression commitment. A game with a large global population can still have thin queues at 9 pm local time.
Team balance refers to how evenly the two sides are composed — by skill rating, by tier, or by vehicle and class in games that have them. Where a game publishes its balance rules, the publisher's own documentation is the authority; where it does not, community explanations are inference, however confident they sound.
Platoons, clans and playing with people you know
A platoon, squad or party is a small group that queues together and is placed in the same match. Matchmaking usually compensates for the advantage of coordination, either by matching the group against another group or by weighting the calculation, and publishers differ on how openly they document that. The practical effect for a new player is that queueing with an experienced friend can place both of them in matches pitched above the new player's level.
A clan is a persistent organisation with its own membership, chat and often its own competitive mode. Joining one changes the game socially more than mechanically, and the questions worth asking before joining are about time expectations rather than skill: whether attendance at scheduled events is required, and what time zone those events run in. Conduct that goes beyond in-game rudeness — serious online abuse, threats, or image-based abuse — falls within the remit of the eSafety Commissioner, Australia's online safety regulator, which operates complaint schemes for those categories.
